YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THIS ALONE.

I had a lot of help getting out of sex addiction. Here’s my story and how I did it.

AFTER WINNING THE SUPER BOWL, I ALMOST LOST EVERYTHING.

I lifted our coach after winning the NFL championship game for the New York Jets.

By the time I was in my early twenties, I was on my way to becoming a sexual addict.

That’s me in my early 20’s with my wife and son.

In those days magazines were the only porn available. I found ways to get them.

I kept my sexual life with porn to myself because I was a Christian man, embarrassed and ashamed; thinking that I was the only man who struggled with pornography and sexual thoughts. But as we all eventually find out we are designed as sexual beings and how we handle our sex drive is important and addictions don’t just go away in fact they can grow and consume more and more of our life. My sexual hunger grew until I wanted more than magazines and pictures and I moved on to prostitutes.

I was afraid to open up my sexual problem to anyone. I will share later the details of who I finally trusted to share my story with and how I got free from sexual addiction in my late twenties.

I got married young to my wife Starla.

Even though I have been free for over fifty years and have never gone back to sex outside of my marriage, I am fully aware that I could go back to pursuing sexual encounters. All I need to recall is the life of Solomon, in the book of 1 Kings 9-11. Solomon was a man known for unusual wisdom. In his senior years Solomon pursued his sexual drive with multiple wives and through them he turned his heart away from the Lord and pursued false Here are some bible verses that inspired me to keep going in the right direction. If Solomon could be deceived in his senior years to pursue sex with multiple women, over his love for God, then in fear and trewmbling I determined to walk carefully and humbly before my God and hold tight to the sexual freedom that God has led me into, lest I fail as aging Solomon did!

3 STEPS TO a new beginning

For over thirty years as a pastor to hundreds of men and women, I am amazed at how many lack a close trusted friend that they could share the challenging areas of their lives with and pray with.

Both from my own experience and from my years of pastoral counseling I learned three steps that have helped me and others find victory.

Talk to a trusted friend, pastor or counselor

If you have no access to these three sources of help, then you can call Christian Broadcasting Network, they have a sex hotline you can call for help: 1-800-700-7000. The prayer center is available 24 hours a day.

I did the hardest thing that I have ever done in my life, I opened up and confessed to my wife my sexual problem. Not every wife or husband is able to listen, forgive and pray for their mate. I confessed to my wife because God told me that He had given her grace for me and her prayers would deliver me from my addiction, and they did.

Get rid of all your porn material

Get rid of videos, pictures online, on your phone, magazines, block-delete websites and any source of access to porn and prostitutes. You must be ruthless with your access to porn or sexual relationships that are tripping you up. Use porn blocking software on your devices, such as Covenant Eyes. Go to www.covenanteyes.com.

to develop self-discipline, Practice fasting

Sexual desire is an appetite that we learn to control or that controls us. Just like our appetite for food; we learn to control what and when we eat or eating will control us. I learned that fasting food gave me strength to control sexual hunger. If I felt a growing urge toward acting out on sexual temptations then I would fast food ie. no food for one, two or three meals. I would only drink water, juice or coffee. I have experienced that a good way to increase your control over wrong sexual desires is to add fasting to your schedule.

How God can help you

How God can help you

Here are some bible verses that inspired me to keep going in the right direction. It wasn’t easy but reading God’s word helped me walk in the right path.

But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.

Proverbs 6:32

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.

Psalms 51:1-2

For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.

Proverbs 5:3-5

Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in you and was given to you by God! You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

Psalms 51:1-2
